Weekly Report (9th to 15th Oct 2017) 

With  2017 SUPER DIRT WEEK , now part of history, the racing season is now over for most people in my area, apart from one other big event. The 1000 Island RV Fall Nationals at the Brockville Ontario Speedway have become the traditional finale in the North East of the various Dirt Car Series events.

My week leading up to it was a nice quiet one with just two medical appointments on my calendar . One with my GP and one for on going blood test.

On Thursday (12 Oct) it was a lovely sunny day in my city , and early that morning I was tipped off by one of my local race drivers that he would be testing his car at the Cornwall Motor Speedway.

Justin Desrosiers and a few others had clubbed together to rent the track for some testing.

I had nothing planned, so drove across town to take a look.

I found Justin with his newly acquired Sportsman car along with Tom Roy, Greg Ezard, Joey Evans and Kevin Fetterly Jr with his Pro Stock. I spent about 30 minutes there chatting and taking pictures,

Friday ‘the thirteenth’ was day one of  Brockville Ontario Speedways 1000 Island RV Fall Nationals, and there was plenty going on.

As well as the SUPER DIRT SERIES for the Big Block Modifieds, the Pro Stocks and Sportsman had DirtCar Series races. Add to this , the Vintage Modifieds were also on the program.

There was an early start time and I was there mid afternoon.

Although, a bit chilly, it was dry and the sun was shining. I chatted to friends and listened to the drivers meeting before placing my lawn chair on the center by turn one and two.

I took my pics from there with my photographer buddy Don Simpson and Peterborough Speedway media guy, Jim Clarke.

There were plenty of cars in attendance and it was going to be a long show.

First Feature was the 100 lap main event, the Super Dirt Series.

This turned out to be a good one with Jimmy Phelps and Billy Decker trading places, until Decker got the upper hand.

Matt Shepherd wasn’t far behind to collect third place.  Prior to this race Shepherd was leading the points race , with Billy Decker close behind with a 46 points deficit.

This years SUPER DIRT SERIES title will be decided in a few weeks time at the final round, the Dirt Track World Finals at Charlotte.

The 50 lap Pro Stock feature was up next , which I watched from the warmth of one of the booths.

This was won by Quebec driver Guy Viens. 

The Sportsman Feature was next , and won by local driver Dylan Evoy.

Following the Sportsman race , Dave Marcuccillo was declared 2017 DirtCar Sportsman  Champion.

By now it was getting late so I chose to miss the final race of the night, for the Vintage Mods and head for home.  I later found out , it was won by Brian Comeau.

I had a relaxing day at home before heading back to Brockville for day two of the Fall Nationals.

This also had an early start and topping the bill were the 358 Modifieds for their DirtCar Series race. The support divisions were the ESS Sprint Cars, Street Stocks and Mini Stocks.

There was a lot of interest leading up to this one with Chris Raabe and Steve Bernard fighting it out in the point chase. 

Joining Don, Jim and myself, was Randy Mallett the official photographer for the ESS..

The weather was a lot different from Friday nights races, with  rain looking imminent, so the show pushed ahead as quick as possible.

With a few spits of rain in the air, the 25 lap Sprint Car feature was run, with few delays.

This was won by Jason Barney.

As soon as the Victory Lane ceremonies were over, the 358 Mods rolled out for the big one.

This turned out to be the best race of the weekend with plenty of lead changes at the front. Erick Rudolph, Luke Whitteker, Dale Planck and Mike Maresca all took a turn at leading, but it was Whitteker  leading  when it mattered.

Dale Planck was second , driving the  # 7m John Mulder car and David Hebert was third.

With this being the final round of the 358 DirtCar Series, Steve Bernard was declared 2017 Champion. 

It was still before 8-00 pm, and so far , the rain had held off.  The main events were in the books, so I chose to miss the Street Stocks and Mini Stocks, and call it a day.
