Cornwall Double Header (Weekly Report 11th Aug 2020)

CORNWALL DOUBLE HEADER  (Weekly Report 11th Aug 2020)

This past weekend the spot light was on my local  Cornwall Motor Speedway for a feast of dirt track racing. There was something going on to please all tastes.

On Saturday the 8th of Aug it was DirtCar Pro Stocks, 360 Sprint Cars, Lightening Sprints and Quads.  They even had kids go karts on the small track during Intermission.

Sunday was the big one, with the headlining 358 Modifieds, Sportsman, Vintage Mods and Mini Stocks.

With the weekend centered in Cornwall ,  my friend Chanty and her father ‘Tech Man ‘ Ted Lesage from Gatineau , Quebec, were staying over at my place.

We were all at the track by mid-afternoon , as the pits began to fill.

It wasn’t long before I met up with the rest of the CMS  ‘Tog’ team .

Sylvain, Daniel, me and Don.

We managed to get former 358 driver Simon Marcoux to take the picture

The DirtCar Pro Stock division would be the main attraction for me on this, the first day of action.

Those that know me well, will be aware that I’m not a big fan of the Sprint Cars. but  I’ve been watching them now, for over 20 years and still take a bit of interest.

It was good to see Ohsweken Speedway promoter and Sprinter , Glenn Styres paying us a visit, along with his young prodigy, Holly Porter.

As usual I spent the first half of the night taking pics from the pit tower until Intermission when the sun went down.

The kids go karts and Quads took place at this time, then it was time for the Features.

There was quite a big program to get through, but it was all done by midnight.

Bruno Richard was the Pro Stock Feature winner and Steve Poirier won in the 360 Sprints .

First three in the Sprints , went to Poirier, Styres and Porter.

Once Ted had finished in the tech shed, we all returned to my place. It turned out to be a late night as we sat out on my front porch chatting over a few beers until 2-00 am.

We had plenty of time to kill on Sunday before heading back across the city for day number two.

For most of us this was the one we’d been looking forward to , with a good line up of Modifieds  and Sportsman along with the Vintage Mods and Mini Stocks as the support.

My fellow AARN  ‘Tog buddy’  Alex Bruce had traveled up from St Catherines , Ontario for this one.

It had been raining  on and off since mid afternoon ,  and for a while things didn’t look good, but it all came to an end just before the scheduled start time.

An army of packing trucks took to the speedway and before too long the track was raceable.

It was too dark and dull for any picture taking from the tower, so I went straight out on to the middle. Thanks Alex for this Picture, but I’m sure it would of looked better without me in it LOL

We also welcomed a new guy to the clan that night, Tyler Lasalle, from Ottawa, who goes under the name of Rowdy and Reckless Photography.

With the later start and more rain threatening , the program was run as quickly and as safely as possible.

The first Feature was for the Mini Stocks .

A Dash for Cash , took place for the Sportsman which was won by Thomas Cook

The 50 lap modified event followed and was won by my good friend David Hebert.

Next up was the Sportsman feature where Johnathon Ferguson got his second win of the year.

To Finish the night, the Vintage Modifieds took to the track for their Feature race. In this division, they  have two different classes within the same race,  depending on the construction of the car (I think thats right, I’m not sure to be honest) .

So, saying that there were two winners. Jason Powers was one of them.

The other was a good friend of mine, Kayla Charland, who I have known since she started racing the Vintage Modifieds about 10 years ago.

Even with the slightly later start, the show was all over before 10-45 pm and I was home by 11-00.

Coming this weekend, Friday Autodrome Granby, Saturday Brockville Ontario Speedway, and Sunday at the Cornwall Motor Speedway.
