Open Practice at Cornwall 13th of June 2021

With many of Ontario’s COVID restrictions lifted over the past few days, it meant the go ahead for the Cornwall Motor Speedway to stage an Open Practice on Sunday  the13th of June

There were still COVID restrictions in place, like ‘no fans allowed’ and mandatory masks, but it was a start, and a step in the right direction.

With drivers and teams itching to get back to racing, there was a good turn out.

The pits included Modifieds, Sportsman, Pro Stocks, Mini Stocks, and a lone Lightening Sprint.

I was there as the pit gates opened and the teams began to arrive.

One of the first people I spoke to was C.d Beauchamp who was  there with his nicely turned out Sportsman,

Charles David recently switched from being the top driver in  Pro Stocks to being an open wheeled rookie. It’s a slow learning curve but I’m sure he will soon be getting some wins.

A newcomer to the Sportsman division is Brennan Moore.

He is fresh from Go Karts and the son of former Modified driver Adam Moore. Adam was always noted for the Canadian Flag he had flying from the roof of his car,

There were other youngsters , in attendance ,  graduating from Go Karts, that included Tristan Ladouceur, (who I visited on a Shop Tour last week) , and Ty Jock.  Both of them having grown up together while competing at the Cornwall Kart track.

Long time Sportsman driver Brent Kelsey was there ready for another season.

Another recent newcomer to the Sportsman ranks is Fire Swamp, who I caught in the pits , getting his tires ready.

As you will have noticed from previous reports , I’ve been doing  quite a few race shop visits of late, so was interested to see how the drivers in question faired.

Here’s a few of them Corey Wheeler ,

Gilles Goddard

Justin Desrosiers,

and I must not forget Gage Morin.

I’ve known Gage since he was a kid and I’ve been good friends  with the Morin family for over 20 years.

Gage has been missing from the tracks for a couple of years, but makes his return in 2021 to the Modifieds  in a car owned by Cliff Merpaw and the Lavergne Family .

With Practice over it’s just one week to go before the start of the season.

The race season ‘for real’ gets under way this coming weekend with a Saturday and Sunday double header
