The Can Am Opener (Latest Blog 4th May 2023)

This past week , my daughter Carla, was staying with me for a few days .

She drove up from North Carolina in her Audi  SUV , for a short visit.

She arrived on Monday 24th April and on Friday 28th she set off for the long journey home.

A few hours after she left, I was also heading for the USA , and my destination , was Lafargeville , New York for the Can Am Speedway season opener.

The weather forecast for the rest of the weekend wasn’t good , but things looked good for Friday.

I took a leisurely drive down to Can Am and was there soon after the pit gates opened at 4-00 pm.

There were plenty of cars in the pits including a few ‘invaders’ that joined the regulars.

The nights program consisted of three DIRTCAR divisions, 358 Modifieds , Sportsman and ProStocks. with Limited Sportsman, Sprint Cars and ThunderCars as the back up.

I stationed myself in my usual spot on the inside of turn three for the heat races.

For the Features I moved to turn one.

The Limited Sportsman were the first of the features.

This was won by Keegan Nier # 34.

Next up was the Pro Stocks and this was won by Dakota Sharp # 12S.

The 25 lap Modified feature followed this , and this turned out to be a good one.

Ryan Arbuthnot was the early leader, but as the race progressed Billy Dunn # 49 got to the front.

With three laps to go , Lance Willix # 31 edged past, and went on to take the checkers.

The Sportsman feature was next.

This gave #32RS, Ryan Shanahan the win.

It was now 9-45pm, so I made my exit, deciding to give the final two races,  for Sprint Cars and Thunder Cars a miss.

I was back home in Cornwall, before mid night.  Perfect.

I awoke Saturday morning to lots of rain , which continued all day.

It wasn’t long before the race cancelation appeared on the media. So there  was no racing for me that night. I had been planning to attend the season opener at the Airborne Speedway, Plattsburgh NY.

An early start to my Sunday was in order, for the Azerbaijan F1 Grand Prix live on TV at 7-00am .

It was another win for Red Bull with Sergio Perez getting the win from team mate, Max Verstappen . Charles Leclerc was third in a Ferrari.

For the rest of the week it was rain, rain  and more rain.
