weekend at home (30 Oct 2010)

RICK @ the RACES (30 Oct)

Once again, I had a weekend at home with no racing. My original plans were to attend Saturdays races at the Five Mile Point Speedway but ‘economics’ prevented me. This event was to be the prelude to a busy week of racing that I’d be concluding at the DIRT TRACK World Finals at Charlotte NC. I’d planned to travel to both events with my buddy Roger Aubin, and share the driving and fuel expenses. Unfortunately Roger has been unwell, for the past couple of weeks and had to give our road trips a miss. This meant solo journeys for me, and obviously doubled my costs. Therefore , cancelled plans for Five Mile Point and instead I took advantage of SPEED TV’s showing of SUPER DIRT WEEK from Syracuse.

It was great to relive Stewart Friesens historic win from the comfort of my couch. By watching it on TV , I was able to see the incidents and drama that I’d missed on the day. The ‘Moody Mile’ is a big place and like many  events sporting events, you tend to see a lot more when it’s televised.

The TV coverage concentrated on following the come back of Jimmy Phelps to second place after an earlier pit stop. It made for some exciting viewing, but I have to feel sorry for one of my buddy’s David Hebert of St Damase, Quebec. He was tailing Stewart for much of the last part of the race and ran out of fuel a few laps from the end. Stewart Friesen of Niagara on the Lake , Ontario made history by becoming the first Canadian to win this event and it could so easy of been a Canadian one and two, if Heberts fuel had lasted. As it happens, Friesen who pitted for gas on lap 68 went a record breaking 132 laps on a tank full.
